iPhone 17 Air could be Apple's first global e-SIM only iPhone

Apple is poised to make a significant change in its mobile strategy with the anticipated release of the iPhone 17 Air, which could become the company's first globally available iPhone devoid of a physical SIM card slot. According to latest reports, this groundbreaking device is set to be unveiled during Apple’s upcoming 'Awe Dropping' event on September 9, where the entire iPhone 17 lineup will be showcased. Ahead of the launch, MacRumors has revealed that Apple is preparing its retail staff at Authorized Resellers across the European Union with mandatory e-SIM training, to be completed by September 5. This move indicates a push toward a more digital-focused approach, as the iPhone 17 Air is rumored to be just 5.5mm thick, potentially necessitating the removal of the SIM tray altogether. The iPhone 17 Air will build on Apple's previous introduction of e-SIM-only models in the United States with the iPhone 14, where the technology was marketed as a more secure alternative, especially in cases of theft, as digital SIMs cannot be physically removed. With the global adoption of e-SIM technology on the rise, the iPhone 17 Air might serve as a pivotal step in Apple's quest for a broader international rollout. In addition to its connectivity features, the iPhone 17 Air is expected to boast a 6.6-inch ProMotion OLED display with a 120Hz refresh rate, a single 48MP rear camera housed in a pill-shaped module, and a 24MP front-facing camera. Weighing in at under 150 grams, this model is projected to be the slimmest and lightest iPhone ever produced. However, its sleek design may come at the cost of a smaller battery compared to its counterparts. Whether the e-SIM-only strategy will extend beyond the iPhone 17 Air to include the Pro and Pro Max versions remains uncertain. Nonetheless, this device could act as a crucial testing ground for Apple's transition towards an entirely digital landscape in mobile connectivity.
