iPhone 17 Air may pack smaller battery than iPhone 16

As Apple gears up for the anticipated launch of the iPhone 17 Air this September, speculation surrounding its features is heating up. Recent insights from the tipster Instant Digital on Weibo indicate that this model may come equipped with a battery capacity of under 3,000mAh. Despite this reduction, it is expected to provide a full day's use, thanks to a new feature called 'Adaptive Power Mode' set to debut with iOS 26. Previously, there were hints that the battery might be around 2,800mAh, which, if accurate, would mark a significant shift for Apple, as it would be the first iPhone since the 12 and 13 models to utilize a battery below the 3,000mAh threshold. However, it's important to note that Instant Digital has had mixed success with their predictions; while they correctly forecasted the yellow color option for the iPhone 14 series, not all of their leaks have proven reliable. Additionally, Wayne Ma from The Information reported earlier this year that the iPhone 17 Air might experience diminished battery life due to its ultra-slim 5.5mm design, which limits the internal battery space. Internal tests suggest that only 60 to 70% of users might manage to get through the day without needing to recharge. In response, Apple is said to be developing a battery case as an optional accessory, a move reminiscent of their offerings during the iPhone 11 series. On the design front, the iPhone 17 Air is rumored to feature a frame made from 7000-series aluminum alloy, known for its strength and lightweight characteristics, which could add approximately 30 grams compared to the heavier titanium used in the iPhone 16 Pro. The device is expected to maintain a 120Hz OLED display and is likely to house the battery as one of its heaviest components, weighing around 35 grams. Camera capabilities are also set to impress, with a single 48MP rear camera and a 24MP front camera designed for high-quality selfies and video calls. Face ID is anticipated for secure biometric access. Under the hood, the iPhone 17 Air will reportedly be powered by Apple's forthcoming A19 chipset and will come with 8GB of RAM, matching the performance of the iPhone 16 Plus. The device is also expected to feature a glass back and support for wireless charging through Apple's MagSafe technology.
