iPadOS 26 review: The iPad finally feels like a real computer

After extensively testing iPadOS 26 on both the iPad Pro M2 and the latest iPad Air M3, I can confidently say that the iPad now operates like a genuine laptop. In many respects, it even surpasses traditional laptops for specific users. The anticipation surrounding this update, revealed during Apple's WWDC, was palpable, as many had hoped for an upgrade that would finally allow the iPad to function more like a computer, though it still lacks some features of a Mac. This latest version of iPadOS has significantly changed how I interact with my device. Previously, my iPad Pro was underutilized, often relegated to being a high-end media player during trips. It excelled at media consumption, light web browsing, and occasional sketching, but when serious tasks arose, the MacBook Air was my go-to. However, with the introduction of iPadOS 26, this dynamic has shifted dramatically. One of the most remarkable features is the revamped window management system. The previous limitations of multitasking have been replaced with a much more intuitive method. Users can now easily resize windows and arrange multiple apps on the screen, similar to a Mac. Whether you prefer overlapping windows, split screens, or quick access to your favorite apps, the experience is seamless and enjoyable. Notably, this windowed mode can be toggled on or off, allowing users to switch between a traditional iPad interface and a more desktop-like experience based on their needs. For over a month, I challenged myself to use only the iPad, leaving my MacBook Air behind. I tackled emails, managed Slack, worked on documents, participated in Zoom calls, and even signed PDFs—all from the iPad. While there were minor challenges, such as more complex processes for signing documents compared to macOS, the overall workflow felt much smoother than I expected. Both the iPad Pro M2 and iPad Air M3 handle iPadOS 26 exceptionally well, showcasing impressive speed and stunning displays. Battery life remains outstanding, and the addition of the Magic Keyboard and trackpad enhances the experience further. The cursor functionality is no longer a novelty; it’s an integral part of the system now. However, it's worth noting that the keyboard case can feel cumbersome for extended typing sessions, and as more accessories are added, the overall weight approaches that of a MacBook Air. The versatility of the iPad is noteworthy. It serves not just as a laptop alternative but also as a media player, digital notepad, art studio, camera, and even a gaming console. This raises the question: does one want the iPad to replace their laptop? For some users, it may indeed be the superior option, providing a lighter load, longer battery life, and a distraction-free interface. Yet, there are times when the simplicity of macOS and its advanced functionalities, such as external monitor support and effortless file management, are missed. In conclusion, while iPadOS 26 does not turn the iPad into a Mac, it does elevate it to a more robust and credible computing device. With the right accessories and usage, it is feasible to leave a laptop behind without sacrificing productivity. Although it may not suit everyone's needs, my experience using the iPad Pro M2 and iPad Air M3 solely has convinced me that this is the most capable iPad experience to date.
