Apple made waves at WWDC 2025 with the official announcement of iOS 26, confirming several anticipated features that had circulated in rumors prior to the event. Among the most notable changes is the renaming of its operating systems to reflect the year of release instead of traditional version numbers, marking a shift from iOS 19 to iOS 26, akin to how car models are designated by year. The new operating system showcases a comprehensive visual redesign, drawing inspiration from Apple’s Vision Pro headset. This redesign, referred to as Liquid Glass, introduces translucent navigation panels and circular app icons, promising a more integrated experience across Apple’s ecosystem, including CarPlay. Significant updates were also made to three key applications: Phone, Camera, and Safari. The Phone app now allows users to combine favorite contacts, recent calls, and voicemails into a single view, while Safari features a visually updated transparent address bar. In an exciting development for gamers, Apple launched a new gaming app that merges Apple Arcade with the App Store's gaming selections. This app serves as a central hub for achievements, leaderboards, and curated content, following Apple's acquisition of its first game studio, RAC7. Additionally, the company introduced Workout Buddy, an AI-driven feature designed to function as a personal fitness coach, providing real-time motivation by leveraging data from the Health app. Although there were hints of a revamped Health app potentially incorporating a food-tracking function, Apple did not address this during the keynote. The Messages app is set to receive an upgrade with AI-powered translation capabilities that will automatically translate incoming messages. It will also introduce a polling feature for group chats, enhancing user interaction. Moreover, users can now personalize their chat backgrounds, mirroring functionality seen in other messaging platforms. The Preview app is making its way from macOS to iPad, allowing for PDF annotation and editing, which is a significant enhancement for users. However, not all anticipated features made the cut. Notably absent were the advanced Siri capabilities that were showcased in a previous presentation, as well as rumored functionalities like AI-powered battery management and reverse wireless charging. These omissions left some attendees and enthusiasts eager for future announcements. As Apple continues to evolve its software offerings, the details confirmed at WWDC 2025 showcase a commitment to innovation and user experience, setting the stage for the future of its devices.
