Trump memecoin investors lost $3.8 billion, analysis finds

Recent analysis from cryptocurrency analytics firm Nansen reveals that nearly 1 million investors have collectively lost around $3.8 billion after purchasing the $TRUMP memecoin associated with former President Donald Trump. According to the report by The New York Times, the data, which is sourced from publicly available blockchain transactions, indicates that approximately 988,905 accounts have seen financial losses related to the memecoin as of late June. This figure represents about two-thirds of all buyers of the $TRUMP token. As of Sunday, the $TRUMP token was trading at $1.69, a staggering decline of nearly 98% from its peak value of $75.35. The launch of the memecoin occurred just three days prior to Trump’s inauguration in 2025, following his previous venture into the crypto space with the establishment of World Liberty Financial, a startup he co-founded with his sons. The associated $WLFI coin has similarly experienced a drastic drop in value. In a recent financial disclosure, Trump reported earning $636 million from the $TRUMP memecoin, which constitutes nearly half of the total $1.4 billion he made from the cryptocurrency sector last year. During Trump’s presidency, the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) made the decision to not classify memecoins as securities and subsequently dropped several lawsuits against crypto companies. A spokesperson from the White House commented to The New York Times, asserting that President Trump is proud of his efforts in establishing the United States as a leading hub for cryptocurrency.
