AI may unleash a 'revenge of the dinosaurs' as corporate giants boost profits, hedge fund exec says

As investors grow increasingly wary of a possible bubble in artificial intelligence stocks, some experts believe that the true potential of AI is just beginning to unfold. David Craver, co-chief investment officer of Lone Pine Capital, highlighted this sentiment during an appearance on Goldman Sachs' podcast, stating that we are currently in the early stages of a significant generational shift in technology. Craver acknowledged the anxiety surrounding the immense investments being funneled into AI but emphasized that key indicators suggest the sector has significant growth ahead. He pointed out that AI models are improving continuously, thanks to enhanced computing power. "They are absolutely getting better," he remarked, noting that their applications are expanding. Moreover, demand for AI solutions is still outpacing supply as major tech players struggle to keep up with the burgeoning need for capacity. Craver also noted that companies are witnessing remarkable returns on their AI investments, with many CEOs claiming they could substantially increase their revenues without hiring additional staff. "I have had numerous CEOs say to us, 'I think I can triple or more the revenues in my business,'" he shared. However, not all companies are reaping the benefits of AI just yet. A recent survey by PwC revealed that 56% of chief executives reported that AI has not yet yielded tangible revenue or cost benefits for their organizations. So far, the early advantages have largely favored infrastructure giants like Nvidia and cloud service providers. Looking to the future, Craver envisions that established corporations will begin to adopt AI technologies at a larger scale, a trend he refers to as the "revenge of the dinosaurs." He predicts that these adaptations will lead to substantial cost reductions, which will be reflected in corporate earnings. "In 2027, CFOs will be reporting significant savings due to new technologies," he stated. Despite the current volatility in the AI stock market, Craver remains optimistic about the future of AI investments. He argues that the perception of a bubble is misleading, suggesting that true market instability will only be evident once the dust settles on the current phase of growth.
