Tech investor Dan Niles predicts AI stocks will crash by 30% to 50% in 2027

Renowned tech investor Dan Niles has issued a stark warning regarding the future of AI stocks, predicting a potential decline of 30% to 50% by early 2027. Speaking on the "Master Investor Podcast," Niles, who is the founder and portfolio manager at Niles Investment Management, expressed concerns over what he perceives as an unsustainable surge in enthusiasm, capital expenditure, and market concentration surrounding AI-related companies. Niles stated, "What do I think happens to these stocks sometime early next year from wherever they get to? They probably go down 30% to 50%." His caution resonates with sentiments from other prominent investors who have flagged the current AI boom as potentially overheated. Notably, Michael Burry, known for his role in the 'Big Short,' has suggested that while new highs and significant drops might occur, he does not foresee an immediate crash as severe as what Niles anticipates. Veteran venture capitalist Bill Gurley echoed similar concerns, indicating that the sector could face a necessary reset as companies continue to burn through cash, making their valuations increasingly difficult to justify. Despite these warnings, Niles believes that the AI industry is entering a new phase of demand driven by advanced AI capable of executing multi-step tasks, which could lead to increased short-term volatility. He likens the current landscape to the internet infrastructure boom of the late 1990s, noting that while the market is currently buoyed by AI enthusiasm and favorable monetary conditions, the speed at which investor sentiment can shift may be underestimated. Niles also highlighted that semiconductor stocks appear overextended after a substantial run, implying that a market correction could be on the horizon. Among his investment recommendations, Niles identified Google as his top mega-cap choice for the next three to five years, citing its comprehensive portfolio of AI assets. However, he cautioned that not all companies associated with AI will emerge victorious. His advice to investors is to remain agile and avoid excessive greed during market upswings, emphasizing the importance of monitoring market reactions to unfolding events.
