The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has initiated an investigation into the tragic death of a worker at a Rivian warehouse in Illinois. The inquiry, confirmed by the federal agency on Friday, is expected to take up to six months. The deceased has been identified as 61-year-old Kevin Lancaster, who reportedly succumbed to "blunt traumatic compressional injuries" after being trapped between a tractor trailer and a loading dock at the facility, which is located near Rivian's manufacturing plant. According to local reports, Lancaster remained stuck in that position for approximately 20 minutes before firefighters managed to reach him. Emergency services responded to the call at 1:40 p.m. local time, but he was pronounced dead shortly after at 2:33 p.m. It remains unclear whether Lancaster was an employee of Rivian or working for another company. As of now, Rivian has not provided any comments regarding the incident. The situation at Rivian’s facility in Normal has come under increased scrutiny following a 2024 Bloomberg News report that revealed 16 serious safety violations attributed to the company over two years. While automotive factories are often seen as hazardous environments, Rivian has only been cited with one violation since that report. OSHA previously acknowledged that Rivian had made improvements to its safety protocols and exhibited cooperation throughout the regulatory process. Rivian’s 4.3 million square-foot facility in Normal is responsible for assembling its flagship R1 pickup truck, R1 SUV, and the commercial electric delivery van known as the EDV. The company is currently expanding the site by an additional 1.1 million square feet to accommodate its upcoming R2 electric vehicle model, which will enhance the factory's capacity to assemble up to 215,000 vehicles annually. The Normal Police Department and the McLean County Coroner are also conducting their investigations into the unfortunate incident.
