In a week filled with mostly incremental updates to its product line, Apple has unveiled an exciting new addition: the MacBook Neo. This fresh, budget-friendly laptop aims to replace the 13-inch MacBook Air as the company's entry-level option. Starting at $599, the MacBook Neo matches the price of the older M1 MacBook Air sold through retailers like Walmart, significantly undercutting the new M5 MacBook Air, which starts at $1,099. Pre-orders for this innovative laptop commence today, and it will be available for purchase on March 11 through Apple’s online and physical stores, as well as select third-party retailers. The MacBook Neo comes in a vibrant selection of four colors: silver, indigo, a charming shade known as "blush," and a bright tone called "citrus." However, to achieve its economical price point, this laptop features some notable trade-offs. Instead of an M-series chip, the Neo is powered by an Apple A18 Pro processor, which includes a six-core CPU made up of two performance cores and four efficiency cores. This is a step down from the more robust M-series chips like the M4 and M5, which boast four performance cores and six efficiency cores. The Neo also has a more limited graphics capability, with only five GPU cores compared to the standard ten found in higher-end models. Additionally, it is capped at 8GB of memory. While this configuration is sufficient for basic tasks and supports Apple Intelligence, users may find it challenging to manage multiple browser tabs or run demanding professional software smoothly.
