From Tokyo to Osaka while you sleep! Japan unveils its first-ever overnight bullet train

This summer, JR Central is set to launch Japan's inaugural overnight Shinkansen service along the busy Tokyo-Osaka route, enhancing the travel experience for those seeking more time at their destinations. Named the Tokaido Lumiere Express, this innovative train will commence operations on August 8, departing late at night and arriving in Osaka the following morning. The Tokaido Lumiere Express is designed for travelers looking to maximize their daytime activities. Scheduled to leave the Tokyo metropolitan area at 10 p.m., the train will make its way to Shin-Osaka, arriving at 6:59 a.m. the next day. The name 'Lumiere,' which translates to 'light' in French, symbolizes the dawn of a new day, according to JR Central. During its overnight journey, the train will make stops at several key locations, including Shinagawa, Shin-Yokohama, Gifu-Hashima, and Kyoto. However, boarding will only be permitted at Tokyo, Shinagawa, and Shin-Yokohama stations. Notably, the train will pause at Gifu-Hashima Station for approximately six hours from midnight until about 6 a.m., allowing passengers to remain onboard during this time. Passengers will have access to vending machines and designated smoking areas during the stop, but they will not be allowed to exit through the station's ticket gates. The ticketing process will open on July 3 at 2 p.m., with ordinary reserved seats priced at 15,000 yen, including tax. In addition to standard accommodations, premium Green Car packages and child fare options will also be available. JR Central has cautioned passengers that maintenance work will occur during the overnight stop, which may result in noise and vibrations within the train compartments. Furthermore, there will be no onboard sales or kiosk services during this time, and smoking is strictly prohibited throughout the entire train. As a response to the rising demand for leisure travel in the summer months, this overnight service aims to provide travelers with the convenience of maximizing their time at their destinations. While JR Central has not confirmed whether the Tokaido Lumiere Express will become a regular seasonal service after its initial run, the company plans to assess passenger feedback and operational results following the debut.
