Flipper unveils a Linux-powered networking gadget built for hackers and tinkerers

Flipper Devices, renowned for its Flipper Zero hacking tool, has unveiled its latest creation: the Flipper One. This innovative gadget boasts extensive network connectivity options and the capability to function as a Linux PC, sparking excitement within the tech community. Having successfully sold over a million Flipper Zero units and generating sales exceeding $150 million, Flipper Devices emphasizes that the Flipper One is not a direct successor to its predecessor, as it operates on a distinct layer. The Flipper Zero has gained popularity among hackers for its ability to connect with various radios, including Bluetooth, RFID, NFC, sub-1GHz transceivers, and Infrared. Users have leveraged it for tasks ranging from key fob simulations to more advanced functions like spamming nearby devices. In contrast, the Flipper One introduces robust network connectivity with features like dual Gigabit Ethernet, USB Ethernet with 5 Gbps speed, and Wi-Fi 6E supporting multiple frequency bands (2.4/5/6 GHz). The device also comes equipped with an M.2 port, facilitating connections to a range of devices such as 5G modems, software-defined radio (SDR) modules, AI accelerators, and SSDs, enhancing its versatility. Still in the early stages of development, Flipper Devices has announced the project but not yet rolled out the device for public use. The Flipper One will operate on two processors, including an eight-core RK3576 chip running open Linux, complemented by a Mali-G52 GPU and a neural processing unit (NPU) for executing local AI models. Collaborating with the open-source software consulting firm Collabora, the company has ensured that this chip's support is integrated into the mainline Linux Kernel, allowing developers to download and modify it freely. Additionally, a two-core Raspberry Pi RP2350 microcontroller will manage essential functions such as the display, buttons, and power management. This ensures that users can still navigate the device even when the Linux system is inactive. CEO Pavel Zhovner has shared that Flipper Devices is also working on its proprietary Linux-based operating system, Flipper OS, currently in conceptual stages. This OS aims to simplify the user experience by allowing access to profiles with pre-configured packages, facilitating easy resets without needing to reflash SD cards. To enhance functionality, the company is developing FlipCTL, an interface for controlling small LCD screens with D-pad and touch controls. The Flipper One can also serve as a router, VPN gateway, or bridge due to its network capabilities. Users can connect a monitor, keyboard, and mouse via a USB hub to create a Linux desktop setup, or utilize its HDMI 2.1 port for a portable media solution supporting 4K streaming at 120Hz. While Flipper Devices has provided a glimpse into the potential of the Flipper One, there are still software elements to be developed, such as mainline kernel support for the NPU and hardware video decoding. The company is actively encouraging developers to contribute to the software ecosystem to bring the final product to fruition. Although the specific launch date remains under wraps, early estimates suggest a base price below $350, excluding cellular capabilities.
