Meta's superintelligence push sparks tension and threats of desertion inside its sprawling AI operations

Meta is making headlines as it aggressively seeks to attract top AI talent from rival firms, ramping up its efforts to develop what it calls 'personal superintelligence.' This initiative has ignited fierce competition in Silicon Valley, leading to notable dissatisfaction among some employees who feel overlooked amid this aggressive talent acquisition strategy. The discontent is particularly pronounced within Meta's generative AI division, known as GenAI, which recently released Llama 4 to a lukewarm reception. Rohan Anil, a former team member, expressed his frustration in a now-deleted post, describing the situation as a 'giant social experiment' and criticizing the treatment of researchers not involved in the superintelligence initiative. Anil left Meta to join AI startup Anthropic just before CEO Mark Zuckerberg's public announcement of the intensified talent hunt. A spokesperson for Meta defended the company's approach, stating that employees are drawn to the organization for its reputation and cutting-edge resources. They pointed out that despite the ongoing tensions, Meta boasts impressive employee retention rates and is expanding its engineering teams at a rapid pace. However, the influx of new hires—often compensated at significantly higher rates—has created an atmosphere of unease within the existing staff. Some GenAI employees feel as though their contributions are being devalued, leading to considerations of leaving for other opportunities or negotiating for positions within the newly established Meta Superintelligence Labs (MSL). The competitive landscape is further complicated by rival firms, including Elon Musk's xAI and Microsoft, who are actively recruiting former Meta employees. Meanwhile, the foundational research group, FAIR, remains largely insulated from these tensions and continues to operate independently under the guidance of chief scientist Yann LeCun. As the internal conflicts unfold, it remains to be seen how Meta will navigate the challenges posed by its ambitious superintelligence goals and the potential fallout from its talent acquisition strategy.
