Intel CEO responds to 'misinformation' and Trump threat in letter to employees

In a recent memo to employees, Intel CEO Lip-Bu Tan addressed what he termed "misinformation" regarding his past roles, following a call from former President Donald Trump for his resignation. Tan emphasized his commitment to high ethical standards throughout his 40-plus years in the industry, stating, "I have built relationships worldwide and across our diverse ecosystem." The situation escalated when Trump urged Tan to resign immediately in a post on Truth Social, labeling him as "highly CONFLICTED." This demand came alongside concerns voiced by Senator Tom Cotton about Tan's ties to Chinese companies and their potential implications for U.S. security. Following the political turmoil, Intel's stock experienced a 3% drop. Senator Cotton's letter raised questions about whether Tan's connections could hinder Intel's compliance with security regulations and its responsibility to American taxpayers. He cited a criminal case involving Cadence Design Systems, where Tan previously served as CEO, pointing out concerns about illegal shipments to China. This raised further speculation on whether Tan had to divest from investments linked to the Chinese Communist Party. Tan was appointed CEO of Intel in March, taking over from Pat Gelsinger, who was dismissed by the board after facing challenges in reviving the struggling chip manufacturer. Bernstein analyst Stacy Rasgon expressed in a note that while he does not believe Tan is truly "conflicted," his associations with China may create a negative perception, particularly given the current political climate. Rasgon noted that unlike other tech leaders, Tan seems to lack a personal rapport with Trump, which could have mitigated some of the backlash. As Intel navigates this challenging environment, the board remains supportive of its transformation strategy, underscoring the company's commitment to advancing U.S. national and economic security while addressing the growing concerns raised by political leaders.
