Intel begins production of most-advanced chip, inching closer to possible Apple deal

Intel has officially kicked off production of its most advanced chip yet, the 18A-P, moving the company closer to a potential partnership to supply chips for Apple's devices. This announcement was made during the VLSI Symposium in Honolulu, Hawaii, where Intel's foundry leader, Naga Chandrasekaran, emphasized the company's commitment to innovation in semiconductor manufacturing. The 18A-P chip, which is currently in the 'risk production' phase, is designed to meet customer specifications and represents a crucial step in Intel's strategy to reclaim its position as a competitive player in the chip market. After experiencing challenges in previous years, Intel sees the 18A series as pivotal for its resurgence. While the 18A technology has been integrated into PC chips since January, Intel has yet to secure a significant external client. Analysts believe that the 18A-P could serve as a turning point for Intel. The new chip promises a performance boost of 9% or a reduction in power consumption by 18% compared to its predecessor, the 18A. Additionally, it boasts a 20% increase in heat resistance and maintains compatibility with existing 18A production setups. Chip analyst Neil Shah from Counterpoint Research highlighted the importance of yield rates, suggesting that achieving over 90% yield in the initial month could help attract new customers. Intel's stock has seen a remarkable surge, climbing over 200% this year, following significant investments from the U.S. government and Nvidia. The company’s CEO, Lip-Bu Tan, anticipates that multiple foundry customer commitments will materialize in the latter half of 2026. Reports also indicated that Intel reached a preliminary agreement to produce chips for Apple, further increasing investor optimism. However, challenges remain, particularly in Intel's manufacturing approach, which primarily utilizes traditional x86 architecture. This differs from the custom chips produced by competitors like Apple and Google, which are based on Arm architecture. As noted by Shah, this lack of experience in Arm chip production is a significant hurdle. In contrast, Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) continues to dominate the market and is expanding its chipmaking facilities nearby. Analysts suggest that Intel may first find success in securing clients for its advanced packaging technologies, such as its embedded multi-die interconnect bridge (EMIB), which competes with TSMC's CoWoS technology. With current packaging bottlenecks at TSMC, this could present a valuable opportunity for Intel. As Intel pushes ahead with its innovations, the industry will be watching closely to see how these developments unfold and whether they can lead to fruitful partnerships in the competitive semiconductor landscape.
