In a strategic move to bolster its position in the AI chip market, Intel is forming a partnership with SambaNova, a startup specializing in artificial intelligence chips. This collaboration follows previous acquisition talks that did not materialize. Lip-Bu Tan, who is both Intel's leader and SambaNova's chairman, has been involved with the startup since investing eight years ago. The new deal, announced recently, involves Intel providing its server chips and graphics cards to SambaNova in a multi-year collaboration aimed at enhancing the efficiency of generative AI models. Intel is also joining a significant $350 million funding round for SambaNova, building on its initial investment from 2019. For several years, Nvidia has dominated the AI landscape with its graphics processing units, becoming the preferred choice for companies developing AI models such as Anthropic and OpenAI. The surge in AI interest, particularly following the launch of ChatGPT in late 2022, has propelled Nvidia to the forefront, making it the world’s most valuable publicly traded company. In contrast, Intel has faced challenges, with a decline in revenue over the past four years. Despite these hurdles, Intel's stock has surged by 75% in the last year, largely fueled by significant investments from the U.S. government and Nvidia's market influence. However, to effectively compete in the AI chip sector, Intel recognizes the need for collaboration. Earlier discussions to acquire SambaNova for $1.6 billion fell through earlier this year, according to reports. SambaNova, which serves major clients such as Hugging Face and Meta, is now set to work with Intel on sales and marketing strategies to enhance product adoption. Co-founder and CEO Rodrigo Liang emphasized the importance of planning in their approach, stating, "It’s not like we’re showing up tomorrow with all these things ready, but we’re doing good planning work." While both companies have refrained from commenting on the acquisition talks, the partnership aims to leverage SambaNova's new SN50 chip, which Liang claims outperforms Nvidia's B200 systems in terms of both power and price efficiency. SambaNova's vision includes expanding its cloud solutions for AI models and selling clusters that clients can deploy in their own data centers. Notably, SambaNova counts SoftBank, a significant investor in OpenAI, among its clients, and the startup's financial backing includes various prominent firms like Vista Equity Partners and T. Rowe Price. Liang acknowledged Nvidia's current market dominance but expressed optimism about the potential for emerging technologies to create competitive alternatives in the AI space.
