Intel: Our upcoming AI chip will be cheaper, run cooler than Nvidia, AMD options

Intel is gearing up to release a new AI chip by year-end, designed to offer a more economical alternative to competitors Nvidia and AMD. The chip, which leverages less expensive memory and cooling technology, marks a strategic shift for the U.S. chipmaker as it aims to regain ground in the booming semiconductor sector that fuels AI technologies. Kevork Kechichian, the head of Intel’s data center division, shared insights on the company's approach, emphasizing a focus on foundational elements to effectively compete in the AI market. The upcoming 'Crescent Island' graphics processing unit (GPU) is specifically engineered to enhance 'inference' tasks—where user requests are processed—rather than the model training processes where Nvidia currently excels. This initiative comes on the heels of a prior unsuccessful venture into GPU development for AI training, known as 'Gaudi,' which saw disappointing sales, leading to the cancellation of its successor last year. Kechichian, who transitioned to Intel from chip designer Arm, expressed a commitment to rebuilding the company’s capabilities in AI while acknowledging a strategic decision to steer clear of the training market based on past experiences. The new chip is anticipated to start shipping in limited quantities to select customers by the end of this year, following an 18-month development timeline. One of the innovative features of Crescent Island is its air-cooling system, which utilizes LPDDR5 memory—a cost-effective alternative to the high-bandwidth memory (HBM) found in Nvidia's offerings. This strategy not only aims to reduce production costs but also addresses challenges faced by rivals Nvidia and AMD in terms of expensive cooling and memory requirements. This launch represents Intel’s initial foray into the lucrative AI infrastructure market under the leadership of CEO Lip-Bu Tan, who assumed the role last year amid criticisms regarding the effectiveness of the previous turnaround strategy led by Pat Gelsinger.
