Intel unveils new processor powered by its 18A semiconductor tech

In a significant development for the tech industry, Intel has introduced its latest processor, codenamed Panther Lake, marking a pivotal upgrade amidst ongoing efforts to revitalize the company. This announcement comes just six months after Lip-Bu Tan took the helm as CEO, pledging to restore Intel’s focus on core operations and innovation. On Thursday, Intel revealed that Panther Lake is the first chip to be manufactured using its cutting-edge 18A semiconductor process. Production is set to take place at Intel's Fab 52 facility in Chandler, Arizona, which became operational in 2024. Tan expressed enthusiasm about this milestone, stating, "We are entering an exciting new era of computing, made possible by great leaps forward in semiconductor technology that will shape the future for decades to come." Alongside Panther Lake, Intel also provided a sneak peek of its Xeon 6+, known as Clearwater Forest, which is poised to be the first server processor utilizing the 18A technology. This product is anticipated to launch in the first half of 2026, further underscoring Intel's commitment to advancing its semiconductor capabilities. This announcement represents Intel’s most significant manufacturing update since Tan assumed leadership in March. His vision includes revitalizing Intel's engineering-driven culture and emphasizing domestic production. The unveiling of the 18A semiconductor process highlights the importance of U.S. manufacturing, with Tan noting, "The United States has always been home to Intel’s most advanced R&D, product design, and manufacturing — and we are proud to build on this legacy." The announcement also reflects a deeper collaboration with the U.S. government, which acquired a 10% equity stake in Intel following discussions between Tan and President Donald Trump about bolstering domestic semiconductor manufacturing capabilities. As Intel embarks on this new chapter, it aims to drive innovation while reinforcing its leadership in the semiconductor space.
