Intel shores up its desktop CPU lineup with boosted Core Ultra 200S Plus chips

In a significant move for desktop computing, Intel has unveiled its upgraded Core Ultra 200S Plus processors, codenamed "Arrow Lake Refresh." Initially launched in late 2024, the original Core Ultra 200S chips represented a pivotal evolution in Intel's desktop CPU offerings, yet they faced challenges in outperforming their predecessors, particularly in gaming scenarios. Despite their efficiency and lower thermal output compared to the older 13th and 14th generation Core CPUs, the 200S chips occasionally lagged behind in gaming performance, especially when stacked against AMD’s formidable Ryzen 7000 and 9000 series X3D processors. These AMD chips feature enhanced L3 cache, providing a substantial edge in gaming applications. While Intel has yet to introduce a next-generation desktop CPU, the new Core Ultra 200S Plus models aim to bolster their lineup with enhanced specifications. The Core Ultra 7 270K Plus and 270KF Plus models now boast additional processor cores, increased clock speeds, and improved memory support. Intel claims these upgrades will yield an average performance boost of 15 percent in gaming. The Core Ultra 7 270K Plus and 270KF Plus models now come equipped with four additional efficiency cores compared to the previous 265K variant, raising the total core count to an impressive 24 cores—comprising 8 performance (P) cores and 16 efficiency (E) cores. Previously, such a high core count would have required opting for a Core Ultra 9 chip. Similarly, the Core Ultra 5 250K Plus and 250KF Plus have also received enhancements, adding four E-cores and increasing their configuration to 6 P-cores and 12 E-cores, making these chips highly competitive for gamers and content creators alike.
