In the rapidly evolving landscape of content creation, Adam Mosseri, the head of Instagram, asserts that human creators will gain importance as artificial intelligence continues to proliferate. During a recent episode of Lenny Rachitsky's podcast, Mosseri emphasized that the surge of synthetic content could drive audiences to value creativity and authenticity even more. "In a world filled with artificial content, I genuinely believe that people will increasingly seek out unique perspectives and authentic voices, not less," Mosseri stated. Since taking the helm at Instagram in 2018, he has recognized the platform's ongoing commitment to supporting creators, highlighting that users often care about the personalities behind the content just as much as the content itself. Mosseri articulated, "Instagram has always been about more than just the visuals; it's about the person sharing their experiences and viewpoints. As the landscape shifts, this element of personal connection will only grow in significance." His remarks arrive at a time when the creator economy faces challenges from AI-generated influencers and virtual models, leading some creators to worry about their futures as brands explore cost-effective digital personalities. However, Mosseri maintains that AI will ultimately enhance the value of genuine human content. He previously noted that the influx of AI has transformed Instagram’s aesthetic, making overly polished images less appealing to users who now crave authenticity. "Flattering imagery has become easy to create and, as a result, somewhat dull to consume. Users are looking for content that resonates on a real level," he explained. Despite the challenges posed by AI, Mosseri views it as a potential advantage for Instagram. He believes the platform should not shy away from AI content but rather focus on educating users about it. "Instead of filtering out AI-generated content, we should inform users whether the content is AI-assisted or not," he remarked. Ultimately, he stressed that the criteria for evaluating content should center on its quality and the creator behind it, rather than the technology employed in its production. Mosseri also pointed out that Instagram must improve its ability to differentiate between high-quality and low-quality AI content. He concluded that the platform’s long-term success hinges on fostering meaningful connections among users, stating, "I think this will help us thrive because people inherently seek connections with other people."
