Instagram has officially introduced its Maps feature in India, enabling users to share their real-time locations with friends and family. This feature, which initially launched in the US and Canada last August, is now set to be accessible to users across the globe. Meta, the parent company of Instagram, has emphasized its commitment to privacy, stating that it has implemented various measures to mitigate misuse since the feature's debut. However, concerns persist regarding potential risks associated with real-time location sharing. The Maps feature allows users to display their geo-tagged location for up to 24 hours, raising alarms about the possibility of stalking or harassment, particularly for younger users who may feel pressured to share their whereabouts. The sensitivity of real-time location data cannot be overstated, especially given Meta's contentious history with user data management. Recent announcements from the company included plans to tailor advertisements based on interactions with its AI chatbot, leading to skepticism about the potential for the Maps feature to be leveraged for targeted advertising or data sales. By default, the location sharing feature is switched off, requiring users to activate it manually. Notably, parents will receive notifications if their teenagers tag their location, giving them the power to disable the feature if desired. Brett Westervelt, Instagram's VP of Design, shared insights in a blog post about updates made since the initial rollout. Users will notice a persistent indicator at the top of the map and inbox reminding them whether their location is being shared. Additionally, when tagging content, users will receive reminders that their location will be visible for 24 hours. For those concerned about privacy, it may be wise to restrict the location sharing feature to a small circle of trusted friends. Adding a location tag to posts will make that content visible on the Map, so users are encouraged to utilize the new preview feature to understand how their content will appear after posting. The newly implemented indicators should help users remain aware of their location sharing status.
