The recent introduction of Instagram's Map feature has ignited significant backlash from users due to privacy apprehensions regarding geolocation data. Launched by Meta, the tool aims to enhance social connectivity by allowing users to share their 'last active location' and stay updated with friends. The feature bears a resemblance to Snapchat's Snap Map, which displays the locations from which friends post. Despite Meta's assurances in a blog entry that location sharing is deactivated by default unless users opt in, many individuals have expressed their unease on social media platforms. One user on Threads, Meta's micro-blogging service, voiced their disbelief at the release of a feature that could potentially expose users' locations without adequate warnings. Concerns have also been raised about the potential for misuse, with some fearing that the feature could be exploited by malicious individuals to track others. Instagram's chief, Adam Mosseri, took to Threads to address these anxieties, asserting that the feature does not reveal users' locations against their will. He emphasized that many users might be misinterpreting the functionality, mistakenly believing that their visibility on the map indicates that others can also see their location. "We're still verifying everything to ensure that users' locations aren't shared without their explicit consent," Mosseri noted, clarifying that sharing requires double confirmation from users. However, some users have reported experiencing unexpected location sharing, claiming that their settings allowed their locations to be visible despite not opting into the feature. One individual highlighted that their location settings for Instagram were set to 'never,' yet they found their location shared with everyone on the app. A spokesperson for Meta reiterated Mosseri's stance, reaffirming that the Instagram Map is disabled by default and that live locations are only shared if users actively choose to enable the feature. Furthermore, the spokesperson stated that only those users who are followed back or those on a custom list can access the shared location information.
