Instagram shows more ‘eating disorder adjacent’ content to vulnerable teens, internal Meta research shows

A recent internal study by Meta has revealed troubling insights about the experiences of teenagers on Instagram, particularly those struggling with body image issues. According to the findings, adolescents who reported negative feelings about their bodies were exposed to significantly higher amounts of content related to eating disorders compared to their peers. The research indicates that among the 223 teens who frequently felt dissatisfied with their bodies after using the platform, 10.5% of the content they encountered was categorized as 'eating disorder adjacent.' In contrast, only 3.3% of the content viewed by other teens fell into this category. The posts often featured explicit displays of body types and harsh judgments, leading to concerns from parents and experts about the potential harm such content can cause. Meta surveyed over 1,100 teens during the 2023-2024 academic year, examining their feelings about body image post-Instagram use. The findings showed a broader trend: teens with negative self-perceptions also engaged with more provocative content, which Meta classified under terms like 'mature themes,' 'risky behavior,' and 'harm & cruelty.' This type of content constituted 27% of what these teens viewed, compared to just 13.6% for those without such negative feelings. Despite these findings, Meta researchers cautioned that the data does not definitively prove that Instagram is responsible for worsening body image issues among users. They noted the possibility that teens with negative self-images may actively seek out harmful content. A spokesperson for Meta emphasized the company's commitment to understanding user experiences and enhancing safety measures for younger audiences. The internal document, labeled as sensitive and not meant for public distribution, has sparked discussions about the platform's responsibility in curbing exposure to harmful content. Research has highlighted a correlation between viewing beauty and fitness content and feelings of body dissatisfaction among teens, prompting calls for stricter content regulation. In a response to growing concerns, Meta has pledged to reduce the visibility of age-restricted content for teenage users, cutting it by half since July. Experts like Jenny Radesky from the University of Michigan have called the study's findings alarming, suggesting that Instagram may be inadvertently profiling vulnerable users and exposing them to detrimental content. The ongoing scrutiny of Instagram's impact on youth has led to various investigations and lawsuits, further complicating the platform's approach to content moderation and user safety.
