Instagram head Adam Mosseri pushes back on MrBeast’s AI fears, but admits society will have to adjust

Adam Mosseri, the head of Instagram, has shared his insights on the transformative role of artificial intelligence (AI) in the creative landscape. Speaking at the Bloomberg Screentime conference, he emphasized that AI tools are set to empower individuals who previously lacked the means to create high-quality content. However, he acknowledged the potential misuse of these technologies by malicious actors, highlighting the importance of teaching younger generations to critically assess the credibility of online videos. In response to concerns raised by popular creator MrBeast, who warned that AI-generated content might jeopardize the livelihoods of creators, Mosseri offered a counterpoint. He argued that while some creators might not fully embrace AI for their elaborate productions, the technology would enhance the capabilities of many, enabling them to produce better content with less effort. "The internet has already made it easier for anyone to publish content, and AI will further lower the barriers to content creation," he stated. Mosseri noted that many creators are already integrating AI into their workflows, using it for tasks such as color correction and filtering, rather than generating entirely synthetic content. He anticipates that the distinction between organic and AI-generated content will blur even further, leading to a more hybrid approach in the future. While he acknowledged Meta's responsibility to better identify AI-generated content, Mosseri admitted that the company's previous attempts to label such content were flawed, resulting in mislabeling real content as AI-generated. He stressed the need for improved labeling systems and suggested that more transparency is vital to help users navigate the evolving digital landscape. Moreover, Mosseri emphasized the necessity for society to adapt, particularly for the younger generation. He expressed concern for his own children, emphasizing the need for them to understand that not everything they see online is a factual representation of reality. He remarked, "As they grow up, they’ll need to consider who is sharing information and what their motivations might be." In the broader context of Instagram's future, Mosseri touched on upcoming features, including a dedicated TV app and a renewed focus on Reels and direct messaging, which reflect current user trends. He also commented on TikTok's changing ownership in the U.S., suggesting that competition fosters improvement and benefits users, as it encourages platforms like Instagram to enhance their offerings. Overall, Mosseri’s insights underscore the dual nature of AI as both a tool for creativity and a challenge for digital literacy in an evolving media landscape.
