Instagram introduces new ‘Ring’ award for top creators

In a bold move to celebrate innovation and creativity, Instagram has revealed a new awards initiative aimed at honoring 25 outstanding creators globally. This program, set to launch next week, is designed to acknowledge individuals who are reshaping culture and challenging norms. The prestigious judging panel includes notable figures such as Instagram's head, Adam Mosseri, acclaimed director Spike Lee, fashion designer Marc Jacobs, popular YouTuber Marques Brownlee, actress Yara Shahidi, and renowned makeup artist Pat McGrath, among others. Each winner will receive a custom-designed gold ring by the talented English designer Grace Wales Bonner, alongside a digital golden ring that will adorn their Instagram profile. Winners will also have the unique opportunity to create a personalized “Like” button that will appear when users like their posts. However, it’s important to note that this initiative does not come with any financial rewards. This decision aligns with Meta's recent trend of scaling back on creator compensation programs, having previously ceased various monetary incentives, including payouts for advertisements and bonuses for content creators. The announcement of this awards program comes at a time when creators are facing significant challenges, including a reported 52% decline in brand partnerships this year, according to a survey by Kajabi. Furthermore, Bank of America highlighted the increasingly competitive landscape, where fewer paid partnerships are being distributed among a larger pool of creators. Despite these hurdles, Instagram is launching this symbolic awards program, which aims to serve as a celebratory platform akin to the Oscars for content creators—albeit without the fanfare of a formal ceremony. In a recent blog post, the company emphasized that the award is dedicated to recognizing those who boldly embrace creativity and foster community through their work. The winners will be publicly announced on October 16.
