Instagram has officially launched its Maps feature in India, following its initial debut in the United States and Canada this past August. This innovative feature is designed with privacy in mind, as it is set to 'off' by default, requiring users to activate it through their settings if they wish to use it. The Maps feature empowers users to share their most recent active location with selected friends, while also allowing them to view their friends' updates and location-tagged content on a map. Users have the flexibility to share their location with a limited group of friends or with anyone they mutually follow. Through this feature, users can explore geo-tagged Reels, Stories, Notes, and posts from their network. It also enables them to discover nearby cafés, keep tabs on travel updates from friends, or uncover popular spots in their vicinity. In terms of parental controls, guardians will receive notifications when their teenager tags their location on Instagram, along with the option to disable this feature. Brett Westervelt, the Vice President and Head of Instagram Design, detailed two significant changes in this rollout compared to the previous versions in the U.S. and Canada. Users will now see a more prominent indicator at the top of both the map and their inbox, along with a reminder about their location-sharing status. Additionally, when tagging content with a location, users will receive a warning that the location will be visible for 24 hours. Furthermore, Instagram aims to educate users by notifying them that adding a location tag to their Stories, Reels, or posts will make that content appear on the Map. To enhance clarity, the platform has removed user profile photos from Map content, ensuring that it is explicitly understood that it is not an individual's personal location. Users will also be provided with a preview of how their content will appear on the Map after they add a location to their stories or reels.
