Instagram takes on Snapchat with new ‘Instagram Map’

Instagram is set to launch a new feature called Instagram Map, enabling users to share their latest location and discover location-specific content. This initiative, part of the Meta-owned platform's ongoing evolution, includes additional features like reposts and a globally accessible 'Friends' tab in Reels. Similar to Snapchat's Snap Map, which recently celebrated over 400 million monthly active users, Instagram's map feature aims to enhance user interaction by allowing friends to coordinate meet-ups more easily. However, Instagram has opted for a different approach regarding location updates. By default, location sharing is turned off, and users’ locations will only refresh upon opening the app, rather than providing real-time updates like Snap Map does. Instagram does offer limited real-time sharing through direct messages, but this is restricted to one hour. The new map feature allows users to see location-based content shared by friends and creators. For instance, if someone shares a story from a nearby event, it will be visible on the map, offering a way for users to discover new hotspots like restaurants or festivals. Additionally, users can leave brief messages, or 'Notes,' on the map, which expands on Instagram's existing messaging features. This new launch is particularly timely, as it may attract users who previously enjoyed Zenly, a social mapping app that Snap acquired and subsequently discontinued in 2023. The map feature is rolling out in the United States first, with plans for global availability shortly. Alongside the map feature, Instagram is also introducing 'Reposts,' inspired by TikTok and Twitter's retweet function. This allows users to share public reels and feed posts, which will appear in friends’ feeds as well as a dedicated 'Reposts' tab on the user’s profile. This function is designed to facilitate interest-sharing while providing creators with a broader audience. Moreover, the global rollout of the 'Friends' tab, initially launched in the U.S., will allow users to view public reels engaged with by friends. Users can maintain privacy by opting out of having their interactions displayed in the tab, offering more control over what content is shared. Instagram’s new features signal its commitment to fostering community and enhancing user experience, positioning itself as a strong competitor in the social media landscape.
