Instagram is finally launching an iPad app

After much anticipation from users, Instagram has officially launched its dedicated iPad app, marking a significant step in enhancing the platform's usability on larger screens. Previously, iPad users had to rely on the iPhone version of the app, which was not optimized for their devices, or use the web version, both of which offered less satisfactory experiences. The new app introduces a user-friendly interface that defaults to the Reels screen, allowing users to effortlessly scroll through short videos on a much larger display. It retains nearly all the functionality available on the phone app, ensuring a seamless transition for users. At the top of the app, Stories are prominently displayed, while a left-hand sidebar provides easy access to essential features such as the following feed, direct messages, search, explore, and notifications. The Feed on iPad comes with three customizable options: "All" for recommended content from followed accounts, "Friends" for updates from mutual contacts, and "Latest" for chronological posts. This revamped iPad app resolves the previous inconvenience of using a scaled-up iOS app, which often resulted in a less-than-pleasant user experience. Instagram has tailored the design specifically for the iPad, allowing for a more immersive interaction. For instance, users can view comments on the side while watching a Reel or access specific conversations in the messages tab while keeping an eye on all active chats. Despite being around for almost 15 years, Instagram had not prioritized the development of an iPad app until now. Adam Mosseri, head of Instagram, previously indicated that there was no rush to create an iPad version. However, earlier reports suggested that the app was finally in development, leading to the rise of third-party solutions like Retro that aimed to improve the Instagram experience for iPad users. The new Instagram app is available to all iPads running iOS 15.1 or later, according to the company's announcement.
