Instagram rolls out “Instants” to share candid photos with close friends

Instagram, the popular social media platform owned by Meta, has launched an innovative photo-sharing feature named Instants. This new addition aims to facilitate the sharing of spontaneous and genuine moments with your closest friends. One of the intriguing aspects of Instants is that the photos shared through this feature will vanish after they are viewed. However, users can keep these images in their personal archive for up to a year and can even share them later as recaps on their Stories. This feature is being marketed as a more authentic and less polished alternative to the heavily edited images typically found on Instagram. Users can interact with Instants by reacting or replying to the shared content. To access this feature, navigate to the bottom right corner of the Instagram app, where a mini stack of photos appears within the inbox. Each Instant is displayed in a smaller frame that retains its original form, distinguishing it from Instagram's full-screen media formats. Additionally, users have the option to select specific friends or followers to share their Instants with, fostering a more intimate sharing experience. Once shared, all Instants will automatically be saved in an archive after a 24-hour period, accessible only to the user. This allows for a private collection of memories that can be revisited or shared later as recaps. In a move to enhance user experience, Instagram has also introduced a separate app available in select regions, including India, that offers quick access to the camera for immediate photo sharing. Furthermore, users have the option to temporarily hide the stack of mini photos in their DMs by using a long-press and swipe gesture. Privacy remains a priority, as Instants includes features similar to those found throughout Instagram, such as the ability to block, mute, or restrict users. For accounts belonging to teenagers, parental supervision options are also available, ensuring a safe environment for younger users.
