Instagram’s new ‘Instants’ feature combines elements from Snapchat and BeReal

On Wednesday, Instagram revealed its latest feature, 'Instants,' aimed at enhancing the way users share genuine, fleeting moments. After a successful trial with a limited audience, the feature is now being rolled out globally. 'Instants' allows users to send disappearing photos to their Close Friends or followers that can be viewed only once and will remain accessible for just 24 hours. This new addition reflects a shift towards more authentic and transient content, drawing inspiration from platforms like Snapchat and BeReal. Differentiating itself from Instagram's traditionally polished imagery, 'Instants' encourages users to capture raw, real-time snapshots. Users can take photos directly using Instagram’s in-app camera, but editing is not an option. Unlike typical posts, users are unable to upload images from their camera roll, and while minimal text can be added, further modifications are not permitted. Meta, Instagram's parent company, articulated in a blog post that the primary goal of 'Instants' is to facilitate the sharing of genuine moments as they occur. Interestingly, Meta is also exploring the possibility of launching 'Instants' as a standalone application in select markets, including Spain and Italy. To share an Instant, users can tap a mini photo stack located in the bottom right corner of their Instagram inbox. Once an Instant is shared, recipients are able to respond with emojis, send replies, or even share their own Instants back. Notably, recipients cannot screenshot or record the Instants shared with them, ensuring the authenticity of the moment. Each user's shared Instants are archived privately for up to one year, allowing them to revisit past moments. Additionally, users can compile these Instants into a recap to post on their Instagram Stories. If an Instant is shared by mistake, there is an option to undo it, removing it from the archive before friends have viewed it. For those who prefer not to receive Instants, a simple gesture of holding down on the Instant pile in the inbox and swiping right will pause incoming requests. Users can also choose to mute or block specific contacts. While Instagram initially served as a platform for friends to connect and share moments, it has increasingly become saturated with influencer content and advertisements. With 'Instants,' the platform aims to refocus on casual, private interactions centered around photo sharing among friends. However, some users might question the necessity of this new feature, as BeReal's popularity has waned and many have already adapted to using Instagram Stories for quick, informal updates.
