Instagram has implemented new restrictions on its Live Broadcast feature, limiting access to public accounts with at least 1,000 followers. This change comes as a surprise, with Instagram providing no explanation for the update that effectively sidelines many casual users, emerging creators, and small businesses from engaging with their audience through live video. Previously, the platform had already put restrictions in place for accounts belonging to teenagers, disabling Live Broadcasts by default for users under 16. Teen users wishing to go live must now obtain parental or guardian consent. The rationale behind these policies appears to be focused on enhancing the online safety of younger users. However, the new eligibility criteria could significantly impact smaller creators who depend on live interactions to cultivate their audience. Many influencers have historically leveraged live sessions to foster direct connections with their followers, a practice that may soon become unattainable under the new guidelines. In addition to these changes, Meta, Instagram's parent company, has recently introduced new safety measures for teen accounts.
