No more 'hashtag stuffing': Instagram limits hashtag usage to just 5 per Reel and post

Instagram has unveiled a bold new policy that significantly reduces the number of hashtags permitted per post and Reel. The platform, owned by Meta, has now capped the maximum limit at just five hashtags, down from the previous allowance of thirty. This change was announced through the official @Creators account, marking a major shift in how users are encouraged to categorize and share their content. The primary goal of this new restriction is to enhance content discovery and improve the overall user experience, effectively discouraging the practice known as 'hashtag stuffing.' This method involves adding a multitude of generic tags in an attempt to manipulate the algorithm. Instagram has emphasized that utilizing fewer, more targeted hashtags can yield better results in reaching the right audience, in contrast to overloading posts with vague terms such as #explore or #reels, which can actually diminish a post's visibility. Adam Mosseri, Instagram's Head, reiterated that hashtags are no longer the main factor driving post reach. Instead, the platform's advanced AI and recommendation systems now focus on other signals, including keywords in captions, on-screen text, and the visual content itself. By enforcing a limit of five hashtags, Instagram is urging creators to be more deliberate in their tagging, advocating for the use of tags as specific organizational tools rather than as a means of artificial amplification. This shift necessitates a strategic overhaul for creators and brands, as niche and community-focused tags are likely to gain increased importance with the algorithm's move toward interest-based discovery. This update follows a testing period during which some users experienced restrictions as low as three hashtags, signaling the end of the era dominated by extensive hashtag lists. This approach prioritizing quality over quantity aligns Instagram with other platforms, such as TikTok, that have already adopted similar measures to cultivate a more relevant and streamlined social media landscape.
