Instagram is embarking on a transformative journey as it tests a new layout aimed at enhancing the user experience for its short-form video feature, Reels. In a bold move, the app will now open directly into the Reels feed for a select group of users in India, marking a significant departure from the classic photo-centric grid that has characterized the platform for years. This initiative is part of a larger strategy by Meta, Instagram's parent company, to adapt to the evolving ways users engage with the app. Alongside the Reels-first approach, participants in this trial will also gain access to a revamped 'Following' tab, which includes a highly anticipated 'Latest' filter. This feature is designed to allow users to view posts from accounts they follow in chronological order, addressing a popular demand that has lingered since the feature was removed in the past. In addition to the 'Latest' filter, users will benefit from an 'All' feed showcasing recommended content, as well as a 'Friends' feed that highlights posts from mutual followers. Meta notes that this redesign is a response to a noticeable shift in user behavior, emphasizing that messaging has become the primary means of sharing photos and videos on the platform. Notably, Reels are reshared over 4.5 billion times daily across Meta's services. While the Reels-focused experience is currently limited to a test group in India, a global rollout is expected to bring a redesigned navigation bar to all users. Future updates will position the direct messages (DMs) icon at the center of the bottom navigation bar for easier access, underscoring its growing importance. With Reels set as the second tab, this layout is designed to facilitate smoother navigation between the most frequently used features of the app: video content and private messaging.
