Instagram is currently experimenting with a new Picture-in-Picture (PiP) feature for its Reels, which allows users to watch videos in a compact floating window while they browse other applications. This development was confirmed to TechCrunch by the platform, owned by Meta, on Tuesday. The PiP feature, which was initially discovered by app researcher Radu Oncescu, notifies a select group of users with a pop-up message detailing how to enable it. With this new functionality, users can keep Reels playing in the background, enabling them to respond to messages, scroll through social media, or engage with other apps without interrupting their viewing experience. This capability is particularly advantageous for longer Reels, where viewer interest may wane. By allowing videos to continue playing during multitasking, Instagram is strategically positioning itself to help content creators maintain audience engagement with extended material. Competitors like TikTok and YouTube already offer Picture-in-Picture features, and Instagram's initiative indicates its commitment to enhancing user experience in line with its rivals. For creators, this feature could lead to increased viewer retention, while Instagram stands to benefit from heightened user engagement and longer time spent within the app. This testing phase follows remarks made by Instagram head Adam Mosseri earlier this year, where he indicated a willingness to explore the possibility of a PiP feature. Currently, the feature is being trialed with a limited number of users, and Instagram has yet to announce plans for a wider rollout.
