Instagram is currently trialing an innovative Picture-in-Picture (PiP) functionality aimed at enhancing the experience of watching reels, as confirmed by the company to TechCrunch on Tuesday. This new feature enables users to view reels in a compact, floating window while simultaneously navigating through other applications, thus facilitating multitasking. The discovery of this feature was made by app researcher Radu Oncescu, and it presents a significant shift in how users engage with content on the platform. Those participating in the trial will receive a notification that explains how to activate the feature. The Picture-in-Picture mode not only promotes multitasking but also has the potential to improve viewer retention for longer videos, particularly in an age where attention spans are diminishing. For instance, users who encounter an extended reel will have the option to let it play in the background while managing other tasks, such as replying to messages or browsing social media. Similar features have been available on popular platforms like TikTok and YouTube for some time now. The introduction of PiP on Instagram could provide content creators with a greater opportunity to hold the attention of their audience for more extended periods. This development may also result in users spending more time within the app. This test comes on the heels of previous remarks by Instagram's head, Adam Mosseri, who hinted at the possibility of such a feature in the near future. He addressed user inquiries by stating he would work with his team to explore options for implementing PiP, responding to calls for Instagram to adopt features similar to those found on TikTok and YouTube. Currently, the feature is being tested with a limited number of users, and it remains uncertain when, or if, Instagram will extend its availability to a broader audience.
