Instagram will soon let parents stop teens from chatting with AI characters

In a significant move aimed at enhancing the safety of young users, Instagram is set to roll out new features that will empower parents to restrict their teenagers' interactions with AI characters on the platform. Announced by parent company Meta, these updates respond to increasing concerns regarding the potential effects of AI on the mental health of adolescents. Parents will have the option to disable their children's access to specific AI chats or block particular characters entirely. Furthermore, the app will provide parents with insights into the topics their teens are discussing with AI, fostering a more aware environment. Meta has indicated that these functionalities are currently under development, with a projected launch early next year. This initiative comes in the wake of mounting criticism from both parents and lawmakers, who argue that online platforms need to do more to safeguard children. Reports have surfaced this year highlighting troubling cases where individuals have experienced emotional turmoil and social isolation after forming close ties with chatbots like ChatGPT. Legal actions have also emerged, including lawsuits against Character.AI, relating to claims that interactions on their platform contributed to incidents of self-harm and suicide among teenagers. In August, a lawsuit was filed against OpenAI, alleging that ChatGPT played a role in the tragic suicide of a 16-year-old. Additionally, a Wall Street Journal investigation revealed that Meta’s chatbots sometimes engaged in inappropriate conversations, even with users marked as minors. In response to these concerns, Meta assures users that their AI characters are specifically designed to avoid discussions about sensitive subjects such as self-harm or disordered eating. Teens will only have access to AI characters focused on educational and sports content. This latest update follows Instagram's recent adjustments to its 'Teen Accounts' settings, which now align with PG-13 ratings, limiting exposure to posts that contain strong language or may promote harmful behaviors. Earlier this month, OpenAI also introduced parental controls for ChatGPT, aiming to filter out graphic content and other sensitive topics.
