Instagram will award top creators with a gold ring. But no cash

In a recent announcement, Instagram unveiled a new initiative called the 'Rings' award, set to recognize 25 creators with a physical gold ring and a corresponding badge on their profiles. However, this unique recognition comes without any cash rewards. A panel of notable figures, including Instagram's head Adam Mosseri, filmmaker Spike Lee, designer Marc Jacobs, and YouTuber Marques Brownlee, will select the recipients. This initiative follows Instagram's decision to phase out its creator bonus program, as brand partnerships decline across the industry. The question arises: why is a company with vast resources opting for jewelry and profile enhancements instead of direct financial incentives? Brownlee expressed to CNBC that this award aims to provide special visibility and motivation for creators to strive for elevated recognition. The award winners will also receive the ability to customize their profile backdrop color and modify the 'like' button. In 2023, Meta discontinued its Reels Play bonus program, which had been a significant income source for many creators, leading to frustrations within the community. One Reddit user remarked that the extra income from the program had been a financial lifeline for their household. In June 2024, Mosseri indicated that the company is contemplating changes to creator compensation, although no specific plans have been released yet. Competing platforms like YouTube and TikTok have established their own revenue-sharing models, with YouTube reportedly disbursing over $100 billion to creators in the past four years. Recent data from a survey by Kajabi highlights a staggering 52% decline in brand deals for creators in 2024. Earlier in the year, Meta attempted to entice creators to promote Instagram on competing platforms like TikTok, Snapchat, and YouTube, but these deals have since concluded according to an Instagram spokesperson. In this context, the introduction of gold rings appears more as a symbolic gesture rather than a robust financial support mechanism in a challenging creator economy. Brownlee noted that this initiative could serve as motivation for creators to enhance their content and gain recognition, emphasizing the value of resonance and inspiration within the community.
