Instagram might soon let you remove yourself from someone’s Close Friends list

Instagram is currently working on a new feature that would permit users to remove themselves from someone else's 'Close Friends' list, as confirmed by Meta to TechCrunch on Friday. This functionality is still in the early development stages and has not yet entered public testing. The 'Close Friends' feature, which enables users to share Stories, Reels, and posts with a select group rather than their entire follower list, has been part of Instagram since 2018. Until now, users have been unable to opt-out from someone else's Close Friends list. The internal prototype for this feature was initially discovered by reverse engineer Alessandro Paluzzi, who is known for identifying unreleased features still in the works. According to a screenshot shared by Paluzzi, users will be notified that leaving a Close Friends list means they will lose access to that person's exclusive content unless they are re-added. While some may feel slighted if someone chooses to leave their Close Friends list, this feature could be a relief for those who prefer not to be included on specific individuals' lists. It's important to note that Instagram's competitor, Snapchat, already provides a similar option, allowing users to remove themselves from private stories. In addition to the Close Friends updates, Instagram is also exploring other new features. Earlier this week, Meta announced plans to begin testing new subscription services that will offer exclusive features across Instagram, Facebook, and WhatsApp. Although specific details about these subscriptions remain under wraps, Paluzzi indicated that a premium Instagram subscription could include benefits like unlimited audience lists, insights on followers who don’t follow back, and the ability to view Stories discreetly. Meta aims to enhance user experience with these upcoming subscription options, allowing for more control over sharing and connections, while maintaining free access to core features. The company seems flexible in its approach, planning to experiment with a variety of subscription features and packages, each offering unique exclusive elements to users.
