Instagram is rolling out an upgraded Map feature in India, now equipped with improved controls to help users better understand when their location is being shared. This development comes in response to earlier confusion surrounding the feature, which first debuted in the United States and Canada back in August. Initially, the launch sparked widespread concern among users, leading to viral posts urging people to disable location sharing due to fears that it was automatically enabled. Adam Mosseri, the head of Instagram, quickly stepped in to clarify that users’ locations are only visible when they explicitly choose to share them. To enhance user awareness, Instagram is adding more noticeable indicators that will display the status of location sharing. A new label will be visible at the top of the Map, allowing users to easily check if their location is currently being shared or if their device's location services are turned off. Additionally, another indicator will be located beneath a user’s profile photo in the Notes section of the DMs page, indicating when location sharing is disabled. Moreover, Instagram is addressing a common misconception: many users thought that tagging a location in their posts meant their live location was also shared on the Map, particularly since their profile pictures were displayed above the content. To clarify this, Instagram has decided to remove profile images from the Map, ensuring that location tags only reflect where content was posted, not users’ current locations. As part of this update, Instagram is also introducing an educational reminder. This feature will explain how location tags on Stories, Reels, and posts are represented on the Map. Additionally, users will now receive a preview of how their content will appear on the Map before they publish it. The Map feature aims to facilitate easier coordination for meetups among friends and allows users to explore posts shared from specific locations. It also provides an avenue for users to browse location-based content shared or liked by friends and creators, even if they opt not to share their own location.
