Study shows Instacart may be charging some shoppers 20% more for the same product

A new investigation by Consumer Reports has raised concerns about Instacart's pricing strategies, suggesting that the delivery service may be using AI-driven dynamic pricing to significantly inflate costs for some shoppers. The study, conducted in collaboration with Groundwork Collaborative, indicates that customers purchasing items from prominent retail partners—including Kroger, Albertsons, Costco, and Safeway—could be facing price hikes of as much as 23% compared to others buying the same products. The technology at the center of these pricing experiments is Eversight, a software-as-a-service tool designed for grocers. It aims to enhance revenue growth by providing retailers with advanced pricing strategies that adapt to consumer expectations. While Instacart has acknowledged that some users might encounter “slightly higher prices,” the report suggests that these increases can often exceed mere modest adjustments, raising serious questions about fairness in pricing. In response to these allegations, Instacart referred inquiries to a prior statement, emphasizing that only a small number of retail partners—specifically ten U.S. retailers—are implementing these pricing tests using the Eversight technology. The company likened its practices to traditional in-store pricing tests that retailers have employed for years to gauge customer reactions. Dynamic pricing is not new, but it has come under scrutiny as more e-commerce platforms face accusations of unfair practices. In a related situation, a report highlighted how dynamic pricing on Amazon led to increased costs for school supplies across U.S. districts, prompting Amazon to label the findings as “flawed and misleading.” As the debate over pricing transparency continues, shoppers are left questioning the true cost of convenience in the digital marketplace.
