Instacart rolls out AI tools for grocers, Sprouts will be first to use its Cart Assistant

Instacart has announced the launch of an innovative array of artificial intelligence tools aimed at enhancing the grocery shopping experience and streamlining retail operations. In a statement to CNBC, CEO Chris Rogers emphasized that this initiative marks a significant advancement in the company's enterprise strategy, which now supports hundreds of digital storefronts. "We are integrating a decade’s worth of development for retailers into the AI era," Rogers explained. He highlighted that these new technologies are designed to empower every grocery store, from local independents to large national chains, with enterprise-grade AI capabilities. Among the newly introduced solutions is an AI shopping assistant, named Cart Assistant, which allows grocers to offer personalized meal planning, budgeting advice, and tailored product recommendations to shoppers. This assistant can be accessed via retailers’ websites through Instacart's Storefront Pro or integrated into AI-enhanced in-store shopping carts. Sprouts Farmers Market and Kroger are set to be the first to implement Cart Assistant on their platforms. Sprouts President and COO Nick Konat noted, "AI is reshaping the shopping landscape, and today’s consumers expect a more personalized and intuitive experience." Additionally, the AI suite includes Store View, which gives grocers real-time insights into store inventory by utilizing images and videos to track products that are low in stock or out of supply. This feature is already operational with partners such as McKeever's and Good Food Holdings. The offerings also encompass an AI-driven catalog management system and advanced analytics for gleaning insights from retail data. Rogers mentioned that Instacart is collaborating with AI leaders like OpenAI, Microsoft, and Google to shape the future of grocery shopping with next-gen digital agents. This latest suite of products reflects the increasing integration of generative AI in the retail sector. Recent moves by competitors, such as Amazon's launch of an AI agent for third-party sellers and Walmart's introduction of multifunctional 'super agents', underscore the competitive landscape. Despite facing challenges, including a dip in shares following Amazon's same-day delivery launch, Instacart is committed to supporting its retail partners in competing against major players like Walmart and Target. "Our retail partners see us as their technology ally in this evolving grocery sector and are eager to engage in the AI transformation alongside the industry's largest entities," concluded Rogers.
