I went to Walmart's HQ and saw how AI is changing what people see, buy, and how fast they get it

Walmart is on a mission to enhance its operations and customer experience through artificial intelligence, and the impact is evident. At the company's headquarters in Bentonville, Arkansas, executives unveiled how AI is becoming integral to their business strategies during an annual shareholders meeting. With a workforce of over 2 million and a customer base in the hundreds of millions, Walmart is leveraging its vast resources to democratize AI access. CEO John Furner emphasized the importance of empowering all employees, regardless of their position, to embrace AI technologies. "We want to democratize the access to learning and democratize the access to making a difference, so that people can learn and grow," he stated. One of the standout innovations presented was the Code Puppy, developed by Walmart Global Tech engineer Mike Pfaffenberger. This tool allows employees from various departments, including those without a tech background, to create their own AI solutions. Unlike traditional companies that centralize AI development, Walmart encourages innovation from the ground up, enabling ideas from locations as diverse as Bangalore to Wichita to be shared and scaled across the organization. However, the push for AI integration has sparked concerns among some employees. At the shareholders meeting, Ava Williams, a stocker, raised issues regarding the pressure AI-driven workflows place on workers, urging for technology that serves employees rather than hinders them. Although shareholders voted against a proposal addressing these concerns, Walmart maintains channels for employee feedback and has introduced a credentialing program in collaboration with OpenAI to help staff build confidence in using AI. The training program aims to equip employees with practical AI skills relevant to their roles. For instance, a logistics manager utilized Google AI certification to create an agent that optimizes delivery routes, enhancing efficiency. AI's influence also extends to Walmart's partnerships, such as the collaboration with Subway for in-store deliveries. AI is used to optimize the timing of sandwich preparation, ensuring that customers receive fresh products. Moreover, at Sam's Club, the use of multimodal AI analysis has enabled deeper insights into customer feedback, moving beyond traditional surveys to understand the emotional context behind member experiences. Chief Growth Officer Seth Dallaire highlighted the learning gained from interactions with the new Sparky chatbot, which functions as a personal shopping assistant. As Walmart embraces this technological transformation, the recognition of innovators like Pfaffenberger underscores the company's commitment to harnessing AI effectively. The journey towards a future powered by AI is just beginning for Walmart, and it appears to be betting on innovation from every corner of its vast operation.
