An OpenAI engineer outlines her one-week hiring sprint, from outreach on Monday to a signed offer on Friday

An engineer at OpenAI has revealed that the company can streamline its hiring process to go from initial outreach to a signed offer within just one week. Jerene Yang, who serves as a team lead for synthetic data generation, shared her experience during a recent episode of the 'AI Across Borders' podcast. Yang described her interview journey as 'extremely quick, extremely efficient, and very no-nonsense.' She joined OpenAI's San Francisco office in October 2024, following a tenure as a senior engineering manager at Google, where she oversaw Cloud Spanner and managed extensive database systems. The hiring process kicked off when a recruiter contacted Yang on a Monday about a position that matched her expertise. She had an initial conversation the very next day with the hiring manager and technical lead. By Wednesday, she had completed a full-day interview that lasted from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., culminating in a job offer the following Thursday, which she signed the next day. A notable element of OpenAI's interview process is the 'technical deep dive' or 'research discussion' round, where candidates can choose a subject to discuss with a researcher. For engineering roles, this often involves detailing systems they have developed, the challenges they faced, and the reasoning behind their decisions. Yang emphasized that this format allows interviewers to assess not only the candidates’ skills but also their intellectual engagement with the topic. In addition to technical prowess, Yang highlighted the importance of being 'brutally efficient' with time for potential candidates. With numerous projects in progress, OpenAI employees must prioritize tasks where their skills provide a decisive advantage. She encouraged candidates to leverage AI tools and consider task automation as part of their skill set. OpenAI's interview structure typically includes résumé screening, introductory calls, skills assessments, and comprehensive final interviews, which can last between four to six hours over one or two days. The interviews are tailored to focus on candidates' areas of expertise while also challenging them to step outside their comfort zones, emphasizing problem-solving, communication, and collaboration.
