Former OpenAI engineer says he received about 10 emails during his year there

Calvin French-Owen, a former engineer at OpenAI, has opened up about his unique experiences during his brief tenure at the renowned AI organization. Joining the company in May 2024 and departing just a month later, French-Owen revealed that he received a mere ten emails throughout his time there, a striking contrast to traditional workplace communication norms. In a candid blog post shared on Tuesday, he expressed a desire to provide insight into the actual culture at OpenAI, amidst the widespread speculation surrounding the company. "There's a lot of smoke and noise about what OpenAI is doing, but not many first-hand accounts of the work environment," he noted. French-Owen elaborated that the company predominantly relied on Slack, a workplace messaging platform, for all internal communications. "An unusual part of OpenAI is that everything, and I mean everything, runs on Slack," he stated, emphasizing the minimal use of email. While he acknowledged that this method could become "incredibly distracting," he also mentioned that it could be manageable if team members effectively curate their channels and notifications. French-Owen also reflected on the leadership style of OpenAI's CEO, Sam Altman, who is known for his exacting standards regarding communication. Citing a profile from September 2023, he pointed out that Altman monitored the responsiveness of founders during his time at Y Combinator. Additionally, French-Owen noticed a significant trend of talent moving from Meta to OpenAI, describing the two companies as similar in their rapid growth and innovative spirit. He highlighted that Meta's CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, has been aggressively recruiting OpenAI employees with lucrative offers, including substantial signing bonuses. This competitive landscape reflects the broader dynamics in the tech industry as companies vie for top talent in AI development.
