Who is Noam Shazeer? AI leader Google paid $2.7 billion to hire

In a significant development for the tech industry, Google stirred attention in late 2024 by re-engaging Noam Shazeer through a licensing agreement with Character.AI. Shazeer, an original member of Google’s workforce, later transitioned to the Google DeepMind team, where he played a crucial role in the early stages of the Gemini project. Since his return to Google, Shazeer has reportedly made substantial contributions to the Gemini initiative. However, his candid remarks during an internal discussion have sparked controversy, leading to tensions within the company. According to a recent report from The Information, Shazeer shared his views on supporting transgender and non-binary colleagues, stating, "I do not believe that humans have an attribute called gender," and expressed his disapproval of certain practices regarding gender identity. Elon Musk, the owner of xAI, publicly supported Shazeer, declaring, "Noam is right," amidst the ongoing debate over gender issues in the workplace. This endorsement from Musk highlights the polarized opinions surrounding the topic. Shazeer, who joined Google in 2000, was instrumental in the Google Brain team and co-authored the influential paper, "Attention Is All You Need," which revolutionized the field with the introduction of the Transformer model—now a foundation for many advanced language models. His journey at Google included the development of the chatbot Meena, which, after being sidelined by the company, led him to establish Character.AI in 2021. Character.AI allows users to interact with AI avatars of both real and fictional figures, tapping into a growing demand for conversational AI. Following the rise of ChatGPT in 2022, Google intensified its AI ambitions with the launch of the Bard chatbot, later rebranded as Gemini. The competitive landscape prompted Google to enter into a licensing agreement with Character.AI, integrating Shazeer and his team into their operations, further solidifying the tech giant's position in the fast-evolving AI race.
