This remarkable monopoly has propelled ASML to become the most valuable company in Europe, boasting a market capitalization exceeding $530 billion. With major American tech giants such as Microsoft, Meta, Amazon, and Google pledging more than $600 billion toward AI infrastructure this year alone, demand for ASML's lithography machines has skyrocketed. The company has candidly acknowledged that the global supply of chips will remain constrained for several years to come as a result of this unprecedented demand. However, such high demand has also attracted competitors. Substrate, a San Francisco startup founded by a protégé of Peter Thiel, has raised over $100 million and has been valued at over $1 billion with ambitions to create a competing lithography machine. Additionally, concerns have been raised regarding former ASML engineers in China who may have reverse-engineered aspects of the technology, presenting significant geopolitical challenges. Christophe Fouquet, who ascended to the role of ASML CEO in 2024 after a decade with the company, shared his insights during an interview on a Beverly Hills hotel rooftop. He reflected on the rapid evolution of AI, stating that while ASML anticipated advancements, the explosive emergence of tools like ChatGPT took the industry by surprise. He emphasized the societal and industrial shifts brought about by AI and acknowledged that the supply chain will struggle to keep up with the burgeoning demand for chips in the coming years. Addressing recent critiques, including comments from TSMC about the high cost of ASML's latest machines, Fouquet explained that while EUV systems may initially appear pricier, they ultimately reduce wafer manufacturing costs significantly. He pointed out that the advancements in technology could lead to a 20-30% decrease in costs for the most sophisticated chip layers. Fouquet also discussed the competitive landscape, specifically the claims made by Substrate and other startups about rival technologies. He insisted that while the desire to innovate is crucial, the technical challenges in lithography are substantial. He noted that the development of EUV technology took ASML two decades, highlighting the complexity involved in creating a viable manufacturing system from scratch. On the topic of collaboration, he mentioned a startup called xLight, which aims to develop a component for ASML's EUV machines. However, he cautioned that any new technology must first demonstrate a clear performance or cost advantage over existing solutions. Regarding reports of reverse-engineering in China, Fouquet strongly refuted the idea, clarifying that no EUV machines have ever been sent to China, and all ASML equipment is accounted for. He expressed confidence in the company's stringent export controls and training protocols that prevent access to sensitive technologies. The conversation also touched on broader export control policies. Fouquet agreed with Nvidia's Jensen Huang that maintaining a technological edge requires a careful balance between global sales and safeguarding innovation.
