Startup says sound waves can replace fire sprinklers; experts aren’t so sure

In a unique demonstration kitchen in Concord, California, a cooking mishap unfolds as oil ignites on an unattended gas stove. Just moments after a smoke alarm goes off, a groundbreaking AI-powered sensor springs into action. It activates wall-mounted emitters that generate infrasound waves aimed at extinguishing the fire. This pioneering approach to fire suppression, rooted in scientific research, works by disrupting oxygen molecules, thereby cutting off the fire's fuel supply. The small kitchen blaze is quickly quelled after only a few seconds of exposure to the infrasound. This demonstration, attended by several firefighters and officials from the Contra Costa County Fire Protection District, as well as representatives from CAL FIRE, California's leading wildland firefighting agency, showcased the potential of this innovative technology. Geoff Bruder, co-founder and CEO of Sonic Fire Tech, highlighted the advancements made by the company, stating, "We were able to not just point-and-shoot like a fire extinguisher; we figured out how to run it through ducting and distribute it like a sprinkler system." Sonic Fire Tech aims to revolutionize fire safety by replacing traditional sprinklers, which, while effective, often cause significant water damage to properties. As the first company attempting to commercialize acoustic fire suppression, Sonic Fire Tech is actively promoting this infrasound technology in Southern California and has now expanded its outreach to Northern California. The startup envisions its system being utilized in various settings, including data centers where water from sprinklers can damage electronic equipment. Additionally, they are working on a portable, backpack-based version intended for use by wildland firefighters in the field.
