Flick, a pioneering startup in AI-driven filmmaking, has recently secured $6 million in seed funding, with backing from notable investors including True Ventures and Y Combinator. The startup combines the artistic vision of cofounders Zoey Zhang and Ray Wang, with Zhang's extensive background in filmmaking and Wang’s experience with consumer technology at Instagram. Zhang's journey into AI filmmaking began after creating an award-winning animated short that utilized various AI tools, marking a significant turning point in her career. This experience fueled her desire to develop a platform that makes filmmaking more accessible. Teaming up with Wang, they conceptualized Flick, which aims to streamline the filmmaking process through user-friendly AI technology. Flick’s platform allows users to create short films using chat-based prompts and multiple AI models, including Google’s Nano Banana and Midjourney. The interface, designed to resemble a storyboard, enables creators to easily manipulate film frames, add notes, and edit scenes without the need for extensive technical skills. With subscription plans ranging from $5 to $600 a month, Flick caters to a variety of filmmakers. One of its standout features is the ability to maintain character consistency across different frames, which Wang emphasizes is crucial for storytellers. They aim to speak the filmmakers' language, allowing creators to focus on narrative rather than the intricacies of AI tools. The startup enters a competitive landscape where several companies are leveraging AI to assist filmmakers. For instance, Moments Lab, which raised $24 million last year, is also creating efficient solutions for content generation. However, Flick’s goal extends beyond simply providing tools; it aspires to democratize filmmaking by reducing the barriers typically associated with the industry, such as expensive equipment and hiring talent. Wang acknowledges the concerns surrounding job displacement in Hollywood due to AI but asserts that their platform will ultimately create more opportunities for aspiring filmmakers. As Flick continues to grow, the team is looking to strengthen its connections within the film industry and may relocate from the Bay Area to Los Angeles to further its mission of empowering creative expression.
