Scale AI alum raises $9M for AI serving critical industries in MENA

Bilal Abu-Ghazaleh has recently relocated to London, while also splitting his time with Dubai. After nearly ten years in the United States, including significant experience at Scale AI, he is now venturing into a new project: 1001 AI. This startup is on a mission to develop AI infrastructure tailored for crucial sectors across the Middle East and North Africa (MENA). The company has successfully raised $9 million in seed funding, with key investors including CIV, General Catalyst, and Lux Capital, along with contributions from notable individuals such as Chris Ré, Amjad Masad from Replit, and several regional angels. Abu-Ghazaleh emphasizes that his nascent company aims to address inefficiencies in high-stakes industries such as aviation, logistics, and oil and gas through an AI-native operating system designed for enhanced decision-making. "In just the top few industries like airports, ports, and construction within the Gulf region, we identify over $10 billion in inefficiencies alone," he stated in an interview with TechCrunch. This figure includes markets in the UAE, Saudi Arabia, and Qatar, representing a significant opportunity for improvement. For instance, optimizing airport operations could lead to cascading savings that benefit both the airport and the airlines operating within it. Furthermore, with nine out of ten large-scale projects in the region facing delays or budget overruns, even minor improvements in efficiency could yield substantial financial benefits. 1001 AI plans to market its decision-making AI solutions to new projects, with its initial product launch set for the end of this year. Discussions are currently ongoing with some of the largest construction firms and airports in the Gulf. Originally from Jordan, Abu-Ghazaleh moved to the U.S. for his education and quickly became integrated into the Bay Area startup ecosystem. After an early role at Hive AI, he joined Scale AI in 2020, where he advanced from operations associate to director of GenAI operations, overseeing the expansion of their contributor network for training data annotation. His journey at Scale took a turn when the company pivoted after a significant investment from Meta, prompting him to establish 1001 AI. The Gulf region, particularly the UAE and Saudi Arabia, is recognized as a frontrunner in AI adoption. Government-backed initiatives like G42 in Abu Dhabi and Saudi Arabia's National Center for AI are investing heavily in local AI infrastructure and attracting global talent. Abu-Ghazaleh sees this combination of demand, funding, and urgency as an ideal environment for testing new technologies. Unlike many AI startups that focus on software solutions, 1001 AI aims to improve physical operations. Investors believe that this approach presents even greater potential within the Middle East. "We are very optimistic about AI applications that address real-world challenges at scale, such as optimizing flight turnarounds at airports and cargo movement at ports," stated Deena Shakir, a partner at Lux Capital. Although the product is still in development, Abu-Ghazaleh provided insights into its functionality. The AI system integrates with a client's existing software, models operational workflows, and generates real-time directives for efficiency improvements. "Currently, an operations manager may need to manually coordinate tasks such as rerouting vehicles or reallocating staff, but our system automates this orchestration using real-time data," he explained. 1001 AI's model is designed to be versatile, as operational workflows often share commonalities across different sectors. The startup employs a consultative approach, working closely with clients to customize its systems according to specific operational needs. "Bilal is creating a decision engine to streamline complex operations, building on proven strategies from Scale and leveraging regional dynamics to establish 1001 as a foundational platform in the market," remarked Neeraj Arora, managing director at General Catalyst. The new funding will not only expedite early deployments in aviation, logistics, and infrastructure but also support recruitment in engineering, operations, and market strategy as the team expands across Dubai and London. 1001 AI is set to roll out its first customer deployment by the year's end, with aspirations to become the preferred orchestration layer for these industries in the Gulf over the next five years, before aiming for global expansion.
