Former Meta employees launch Stream, a smart ring that takes voice notes and controls music

A new wave of voice-driven technology is reshaping how we interact with devices, and the latest entrant is a smart ring called Stream, launched by two former Meta employees. This innovative device, created by the startup Sandbar, aims to enhance productivity and personal expression through voice commands, positioning itself as 'a mouse for voice.' Mina Fahmi, the CEO of Sandbar, has a rich background in human-computer interaction, having previously worked with Kernel and Magic Leap. His co-founder, Kirak Hong, brings experience from Google and CTRL-Labs, where the duo first collaborated. Their combined expertise led to the development of Stream, which allows users to take notes, engage with AI assistants, and control music seamlessly. Fahmi's journey began with an experimental journaling app that ultimately felt cumbersome. He recognized the need for a more natural method to capture thoughts as they arise, especially during moments of inspiration while commuting or walking. Thus, the concept of Stream was born, designed to be worn comfortably on the index finger. Equipped with sensitive microphones and a touchpad, the ring only activates when the user presses and holds the pad, ensuring privacy. In a demo, Fahmi demonstrated how the device could transcribe whispered thoughts directly into the accompanying iOS app. The app includes an AI chatbot that assists in organizing and editing notes, providing a tailored conversational experience. The ring also features a flat surface that doubles as a media controller, enabling users to manage music playback without needing to reach for their phones. This functionality could be particularly beneficial for those on the go or with their hands full. Starting Wednesday, Stream is available for preorder at $249 for the silver version and $299 for gold, with an expected shipping date of next summer. Sandbar also offers a Pro subscription, free for the first three months for early adopters, which includes unlimited chat capabilities and enhanced features. Fahmi emphasized the importance of user data control, ensuring encryption and support for exporting information to platforms like Notion. With $13 million in funding from notable investors, including True Ventures and Upfront Ventures, Sandbar is poised to carve out its niche in the competitive voice-AI hardware market. As voice technology continues to evolve, Stream aims to redefine how users capture and express their thoughts, emphasizing convenience and user autonomy.
