Esther and Anne Wojcicki join new healthcare accelerator, fund

A groundbreaking initiative is set to address one of the U.S.'s most urgent challenges: healthcare innovation. On Wednesday, Mary Minno, an investor and former Google product manager, unveiled the launch of Treehub, an early-stage startup accelerator, alongside the AI Health Fund, a venture firm specifically designed to support startups at the intersection of healthcare and artificial intelligence. The AI Health Fund serves as the venture arm of the Treehub residency, where aspiring founders can apply to incubate their innovative ideas. The residency spans six months, with the first 12 weeks aimed at helping participants achieve product-market fit, followed by another 12 weeks focused on refining company strategy. Minno noted that this could involve raising substantial funding, joining a traditional accelerator, or even integrating into hospital systems. The inspiration for this program struck Minno last year during a personal crisis when a family member was diagnosed with acute leukemia. Frustrated by the difficulties in finding a specialist and the delays in treatment caused by outdated technology and policy, she recognized the need for more startups in the healthcare sector to challenge the existing norms. To bring her vision to life, Minno reached out to her longtime friend Esther Wojcicki, an educator and mother of 23andMe founder Anne Wojcicki. Their discussions centered around how to foster innovation in healthcare, particularly with academic researchers who often struggle to commercialize their ideas effectively. To facilitate this, Minno and Wojcicki established a program that pairs experienced operators with academically-focused founders, aiming to teach them the nuances of building a successful business. Alongside the Treehub residency, they collaborated with Stanford’s biomedical data science department to launch the AI Health Fund, which offers early investments ranging from $50,000 to $150,000 to promising companies emerging from academic settings. With a goal to raise $10 million, the fund recently closed its first round at $1.5 million, with contributions from personal networks and a significant investment from billionaire venture capitalist Tim Draper. Anne Wojcicki has joined as an operating partner, while Esther Wojcicki provides guidance as a founding advisor. The team from Stanford includes experts in biomedical data science and genetics, aiming to back at least 60 companies in this initial phase. The AI Health Fund is designed to also support founders who may not participate in the residency or are seasoned entrepreneurs with strong ideas. So far, 12 companies from the Treehub program have received backing, including Clair Health, a women’s hormone tracker, and a new venture focused on pediatric autism. As the residency program is still in its early stages, Minno emphasizes the importance of adapting the accelerator-fund model to best serve the founders. The program aims to provide comprehensive support, including legal assistance for incorporation, effectively acting as a co-founder. Unlike traditional accelerators, Treehub does not host a demo day, as its companies develop at varying paces. The overarching objective is to assess this inaugural residency cycle to determine which elements are scalable and which should remain small-scale. "We are committed to ensuring the success of every company we work with, with the vision to expand our reach across the country after refining our approach," Minno expressed enthusiastically.
